Who is Des? Does he even exist? This is a question we hear quite often. And yes, he certainly does! Des Brougham was a young man who had a dream…

How it all began

In 1963 Des and his younger brother Trevor started what has become one of the most successful people transport companies within South Australia: Des’s Cabs. It began as a taxi business in Whyalla with 2 x 1960 FB Holdens and 3 brand new 1963 EJ Holden sedans. Within a couple of years the fleet grew substantially.

It was Des’s brother Trevor Brougham who had a strong influence on the early company. After his sudden death in 1974 his eldest son Chris Brougham took over his position at the adolescent age of 20.

It was Chris who built significantly on the already successful operating company his father and uncle left behind. He felt the capability of this thriving industry and over the years decided to expand to other locations, which include Port Lincoln, Port Augusta, Cowell and Adelaide.

Chris has not only expanded the taxi industry market to minibuses and coaches, but also the backpacker industry. Des’s is now the proud owner of the following companies:

Des’s Whyalla & Des’s Port Augusta – taxis & coaches
Des’s Adelaide, Des’s Port Lincoln, Mt Barker & Peninsula Taxis – taxis
Des’s Port Pirie – coaches

Des’s Minibus – Minibus chartered tours, airport transfers, wedding transports, school and uni runs, corporate, seniors

Ezyrent Minibuses – Minibus self hire

Groovy Grape Tours – Backpacker tours to Flinders Ranges, Outback S.A, Red Centre, Alice Springs, Kangaroo Island, Great Ocean Road, Grampians, Melbourne and S.A wine regions.

Today the Des’s Group operates over 200 vehicles and employs directly and indirectly in excess of 300 people from depots in Hindmarsh, Darlington, Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Lincoln, Port Pirie and Cowell.

And what happened to Des?

Whilst Des has now taken a step back from the industry he still watches with pride the progress of the Des’s businesses under the reigns of his nephew and the wider Brougham family, many of whom work in the business.
